Kick-Off: Design Thinking for Sustainability

What are the main transition challenges in our region and how can we tackle them? Over 30 participants – representatives of local industry associations, municipalities, trade unions, universities and think tanks – tried to find answers to this question within two design thinking workshops held in Katowice, Poland, on September 11 and 13. Both events took place in the Silesian museum – itself a perfect example for industrial transition on a former mining site, with a mining shaft as a landmark and attraction for visitors.

But what exactly is design thinking? Key stakeholders with interest and expertise in the industry transition in Silesia shared their lessons learnt but also jointly worked on a solution-based approach to tackle the shift to a low-carbon economy.

The workshops provided an opportunity to:

  • Exchange project ideas and ongoing projects with regional stakeholders and the Re-Industrialise team
  • Learn about how Re-Industrialise can support the regional transition in Silesia
  • Discuss challenges and needs within the region
  • Expand the regional and international network
  • Learn ideation techniques and design thinking to develop new projects eligible under the project call
